Very insightful. People often get so caught up in one of their identities that they forget they're multidimensional. It's a sure recipe for losing one's individuality

Exactly this: The multidimensionality of humans. It’s very important to keep in mind, thank you for your kind comment!

This is why I like to define myself as human first and foremost. Nothing more, nothing less. I have so many interests and diverse areas of knowledge that labelling me only one thing at a time comes across as just boxing and stifling. Especially when I try to create on social media and spend my time in "one niche".

I think if we deep it, it also ties to human's innate nature as polymaths which we've somehow managed to convince ourselves that it's for "talented people" or only a rare case because the Industrial Revolution introduced the concept of "specificists"

Awesome comment, I totally recognize myself in what you say: it’s just too difficult to put yourself in one box, niche or group. I agree with the polymath thing, it actually helps to embrace the diverse interests instead of trying to narrow it down in some smaller more easily definable category. And just look at the greatest minds in history: Plato, Goethe, Einstein where all polymaths and didn’t limit what they explored

Currently reading The Polymath by Waqas Ahmed. It's so very revealing.

i love the idea of letting the contradictions in yourself exist without needing to resolve them into some neatly categorized identity . i think just being a person is constantly full of things that don’t quite reconcile with each other and how much richer that makes a life! alsoo Dostoevsky & Family Guy made me laugh

Floris van Doorn's avatar

Yes exactly, I’m glad you agree! Not everything has to be reconciled

So, when you strip away all your identities you are left with your core essence.

I would rather say, when people stop try to fit themselves in certain boxes, they leave more room for themselves to be unique. So more like: by stripping away the categories and the personalities or stereotypes associated with it or at least by making it less central to who you are, you get a better chance at developing something of a core essence
