Desire is so rarely just about wanting an object or an outcome; it's almost always a mirror reflecting our deepest hunger. The psychological layering here makes the whole piece feel both intellectually grounded and deeply vulnerable.

So glad you leaned into opening up more with your writing. Wonderful work!

What a interesting read:

"I believe that writing for any other reason except for intrinsic motivations is disingenuous. It’s deceiving." I knew eventually you would get into falling in love because you used the word Desire.. instead of want or need. I love the KLIMT art. What a romanticist you are.. PEOPLE write to communicate facts.. there are dozens of reasons why people write. I took a Technical Writing course at the Graduate level where I learned to describe in as few words as possible "cooking a meal" which has nothing to do w/ writing for to to teach a lesson. Writing if you look at the history of "writing" in fact a lot of it was recording transactions.. observations of the building, life as it is lived.. and then on the flowery stuff .. expressions of love for family. As I Christian I like to think of examples of writing which instruct and inform.. like the Bible (history,, and expressions of faith.. praise, victory and defeat. instructions to build temple etc) Shakespeare. our Constitution, As a writer I do realize that the kind of writing you are referring is at the elevated and elite level of writing where all basic needs have been met many times over.. in fact the language of a satiated and wealthy society. People are born talents. You have been a gift .. :) SO WAY TO GO.. no editing there. need to go it is Sunday .. and I am want to enjoy the day.. and not be on line.

I think what you're describing can also be related to atelic activities. Doing things just for the pleasure and sake of doing them and nothing more. No external end goal, achievement or target.

Yes good point, the thrill of exercise

Thank you so much haha, your compliments are very kind. With writing I meant it in the sense how I do it, though I don’t think this approach should be used for ALL writing e.g. legal documents. I meant it in the way some people begin to paint or anything out of a passion and outside factors slowly an begin to corrupt their motivations. Also funny you point out the romanticism, perhaps it’s a bit elevated because of the paintings, but yes I tend to have higher ideals. I am certainly not blind to reality, but if I can change the way I see the world, the world changes so better feed it with approaches like this which are not the norm, but certainly not impossible either and to be fair once you start livi ng that way it isn’t something you immediately want to give up

Floris, I understand what you mean about writing simply because you love it. There's a freedom in creating without constantly wondering what it will bring you in return. Though I wouldn't say that wanting to reach or help someone makes writing less genuine. Sometimes the joy of creating and the wish to share something meaningful are simply part of the same impulse.

I agree, in most cases it’s a (unconscious) blend of motivations. Although I would still argue that if actions like creating something solely, because of a force outside of yourself is less genuine, when it’s only instrumental I think that is disingenuous. Although I do agree with you that doing something for someone else, because it makes them happy is a special thing too, but it does weird enough have the same philosophy behind it because you do it without expecting anything. All that aside I know this essay is on the more idealistic side of things. I added a new paragraph to integrate your point btw

A Romantic ! :) keep writing what you want to share. you know you have to know that PEOPLE LIE.. and yes writing DISINGENUOUS stuff all the time... especially in the legal arena.. court documents and statements filled w flat our lies. I will focus on the postive but I have spent a lot of time here in the legal system years ago and it was always a drain on the soul. do not want to do that again > remain positive.. have A BEAUTIFUL DAY.
